Norwegian home ready for Christmas

I stumbled upon this beautiful Norwegian home on pinterest ( my favorite hangout place). It is far from typical Scandinavian Christmas decoration, more like American modern country... :-)

Christmas wreaths

My plan is to finish the Christmas cleaning and put up the Christmas decorations next weekend, except for the tree, that can wait a bit longer. As I have mentioned before I don't decorate much, except for one room in the house, my eleven years old, where it looks like Christmas wonderland. For the rest of the house  I want to have everything clean but a wreath is a must. Here you can learn to make your own wreath.

Christmas is just around the corner

I am such a minimalist especially when it comes to decorating for Christmas. Although I do not decorate much my self am I quite passionate about it. I have a white advent - light  I have not used in years, so when I saw this picture, I got the idea to spray (or paint) it black.

Ég las grein í Kvennablaðinu rétt fyrir jól sem fjallaði um hvort jólageðveikin væri sjálfskaparvíti kvenna. Þessi tími sem gefur sig út fyrir að vera tími friðar og gleði getur allavega orðið sjálfskaparvíti. Ég hef lent í því. Samt hef ég aldrei nokkurn tíma verið að hamast við að baka sörur, sent jólakort kannski 5 sinnum um ævina og það hefur verið heppni ef gjafirnar sem ég hef gefið hafa náð að hanga inni í pappírnum þangað til á aðfangadag. Ég get sem sagt ekki sagt að ég sé nein Martha Stewart. Samt hef ég stressast svo mikið upp fyrir jólin að ég er nær því að gráta en gleðjast þegar klukkan slær 6 á aðfangadagskvöld - kannski mest vegna samviskubits yfir því að vera ekki nógu myndarleg! Ég er komin yfir það. Í ár var þetta eins einfalt og hugsast getur. Enginn bakstur eða jólakort frekar en venjulega og aðventuransinn var sóttur inn í skáp þriðja í aðventu. Ég gaf 5 jólagjafir sem flestum var pakkað inn í verslunarmiðstöðinni, hina dúllaði ég við á Þorláksmessu. Á aðventunni lagði ég mestan metnað í að gera heimilið mitt kósý og njóta lífsins með dóttur minni og vinum mínum. Þar sem fjölskyldan var nánast öll erlendis ákvað ég að gera það sem engum dettur í hug nema ferðamönnum - ég fór út að borða á aðfangadagskvöld með dóttur minni ;) Við fengum fjóra rétti, hvern öðrum betri og eftir matinn snigluðumst við heim í náttföt, opnuðum pakkana og borðuðum mandarínur og konfekt yfir bíómyndum til kl. 4 um nóttina. Á jóladag borðuðum við egg og beikon ;) Allt frekar óhefðbundið... En ég sver það, mér líður eins og ég hafi verið í fríi allan desember!

I read an article just before Christmas, in an Icelandic online magazine that discussed whether the "Christmas frenzy" has become a self-created hell for women. At least this particular time of year, that purports to be so full of peace and joy, can be a self-created hell, I certainly relate to that. Even though I have never baked cookies and I've maybe sent Christmas cards 5 times in my life and it is pure luck that the gifts I've bought have managed to stay inside the gift-wrap until Christmas. You get the picture - I am not Martha Stewart. Still I have been so stressed that when the clock strikes six on Christmas eve I have been closer to cry than rejoice. Probably mostly out of guilt for not being domestic enough! I have gotten over that now. This time it was all as simple as can be. I didn't take up baking or Christmas card writing this year nor did I make an advent wreath. I bought 5 Christmas presents and most of them were wrapped at the mall - others I enjoyed wrapping at home the day before Christmas. I spent most of my free time in December making my home cozy and welcoming and just having a nice time with my friends and my daughter. As most of my family was abroad during Christmas I decided to do something that nobody would even think of, unless they are a tourist. I had my Christmas dinner at a restaurant - with my daughter of course  ;) We had four delicious courses and afterwards we went home, straight into our pajamas, opened our presents and ate chocolate and tangerines and watched movies until four in the morning. On Christmas day we had bacon and eggs ;) Hardly traditional but I swear to you - December felt like vacation this time!

Pretty presents

Það þarf ekki að vera mikið mál að gera jólapakkana skrautlega og fallega. Oft er hægt að nota það sem til er heima fyrir eins og dagblöð og bollakökuform. Flottustu pakkarnir verða oft til þegar  enginn gjafapappír er til á heimilinu og maður þarf að nota ímyndunaraflið og finna eitthvað sniðugt...

It doesn't have to take much effort to make the Christmas presents pretty. You can often use things you already have at home like newspapers or paper cupcake cups. When you don't have any traditional gift wrapping paper at home you have to use your imagination and that is often how you end up with the prettiest presents...

Christmas tree

Ég ólst upp við það að jólatréð var ekki skreytt fyrr en á Þorláksmessu og hélt þeirri hefð framan af. Við fórum fjölskyldan í gær og keyptum jólatré, svo það er ekki eftir neinu að bíða ... 

It was a tradition in my family when I was growing up to decorate the Christmas tree the day before Christmas. But not this year, I have already bought the tree, so there is no reason to wait...

It is that time of the year

Það er allt í lagi að fara plana jólaskrautið í ár þó svo að nóvember sé rétt að byrja:-) Allavega kveikja á kertum og setja greni í vasa. 

Even though it is just the beginning of November it's alright to start planning the Christmas decorations:-)  At least light up some candles and put some spruce in a vase.

Merry Christmas

 

December has been a busy and delightful month. A lot to wrap up at work and many Christmas parties, concerts and gatherings to attend... And then there are the cookies to bake, presents to buy.. you know ;) Dusty wishes you and your family a happy Christmas. We hope you enjoy this time as much as possible. We plan to spend time with our families, eat well, stay in our pajamas, read a good book and watch a lot of old movies :)
